Now that my hair has turned gray, I periodically think back and consider “what if …” What if I had chosen a different major in college? What if I had not taken a specific job opportunity?

I have been an ASQ member since 1990 and have served continuously as an ASQ member leader (aka volunteer) for 30-plus years. One of the many benefits of volunteering is the opportunity to observe, up close, how ASQ goes about practicing what it preaches.

Recently I attended two separate meetings where the topic of Job 1 and Job 2 was discussed.  This topic was new to several of my coworkers and it was something I had not heard discussed in probably 20 years.  For those of you not familiar with Job 1 and Job 2, allow me to explain:

A standard is a document established by consensus and approved by a recognized bodythat provides – for common and repeated use – rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context.

The dedicated and selfless ASQ member leaders are the primary reason why the society is able to fulfill its mission of: empowering individuals and communities of the world to achieve excellence through quality.

ASQ is a professional society composed of members located throughout the world who are bound together through ASQ’s Code of Ethics: its core values.
